Message from the Cadet Commander
When I joined the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program in 2006, I never guessed what was awaiting me. This program has changed me, and I've watched it change my peers.
As cadet commander at Cass County Composite Squadron, I work with many other members to continue development of one of the most vibrant Civil Air Patrol cadet programs in the Kansas City area. In the cadet program, youth are able to learn while having fun, in an environment that promotes teamwork.
Cadets attend weekly meetings where they learn about aerospace, leadership, military ceremony, and much more. Special weekend activities such as NRA shooting, honor guards, and emergency response training are also available. Once a quarter we like to have some fun in a more social setting, with a squadron party.
Many exciting summer activities exist for cadets. Encampments are an experience for new cadets to learn and have fun during a challenging week. Amidst the challenge, there are quite a few surprises for the cadets; perhaps hanging out the side of a flying helicopter or rappelling off a tower. Cadets with a few stripes have a chance to apply for a staff position where they will learn much as they perform the required staff duties. Week long National Cadet Special Activities bring much more to the table than your average summer camp. They range from military academies, to technology academies, to flight academies, and even a National Cadet Competition.
Civil Air Patrol is a great stepping stone for youth, especially those pursuing military careers. Scholarships are available to cadets who achieve a high rank in the program. Leadership skills that cadets learn are invaluable in any environment.
I have been fortunate enough to have experienced many of the exciting activities Civil Air Patrol offers to cadets. I encourage you to find out what the Civil Air Patrol has in store for you. My staff and I at Cass County Composite Squadron invite you to join our program and reach for the skies!
